چکیده

Sanskrit is an accented language. The accent is very prominent in Vedic Sanskrit but classical Sanskrit does not make use of it. Accent is a disambiguation device which can help to understand the correct sense of a word. Words in Sanskrit tend to fall in certain grammatical categories like ghañantas, vocatives etc. Words in a category tend to have an accent governed by either a general or a special rule of accentuation. Pāṇini’s special (apavāda) rules of accentuation for a specific category of words can be studied along with the general (utsarga) rules of accentuation for the same class. The resulting body of rules states all the conditions necessary for accentuation of words from that class. The conditions reveal a set of features which can be used for determining the correct accent. If the features of accentuation for a class of words is understood, computers can be trained to accentuate unaccented words from that class. This paper discusses some features of ghañanta words and how the features can be used to restore accent on unaccented ghañanta words.

Compositional vs. Paradigmatic Approaches to Accent and Ablaut

COMPOSITIONAL approaches to mobile accentuation of the Indo-European type derive the accent of words from the lexically specified accentual features of their constituent morphemes, together with the BASIC ACCENTUATION PRINCIPLE (BAP), which erases all accents but the leftmost one, and assigns an accent to the left edge of an unaccented domain.1 I propose here a compositional analysis in which B...

Event-related Potential Evidence on the Influence of Accentuation in Spoken Discourse Comprehension in Chinese

In an event-related potential experiment with Chinese discourses as material, we investigated how and when accentuation influences spoken discourse comprehension in relation to the different information states of the critical words. These words could either provide new or old information. It was shown that variation of accentuation influenced the amplitude of the N400, with a larger amplitude f...

Accentuation and Interpretation

Optimal accentuation of a sentence involves accentuating a minimal set of words which in a given context suffices for understanding the entire sentence. We propose a model of the interpretation of incomplete or not entirely recognized utterances. Using this model, we determine which constituents of an utterance have to be accentuated given a certain context. 1. Optimal Accentuation Our basic as...

Accentuation of Adpositions and Particles in a Text-to-Speech System for Dutch

In this paper I propose an accent placement algorithm that locates accents on adpositions and particles for the use in a Dutch text-to-speech (TTS) system. The algorithm is intended to be a refinement of the rule that accents only content words, which is used in most TTS systems. Before the algorithm is set up, I discuss when adpositions and particles are accented in Dutch. For this empirical r...

Accentuation cues in French and German

The use of acoustic properties by French and German speakers in accentuating and de-accentuating words in accordance with changes in information weighting is examined. In particular, the role of duration is shown to differ for the two languages, confirming earlier findings. In addition, a difference in the relative contribution of F0, intensity and spectral balance is found for the prediction o...
